Serving a Green Table with Potato Forks and Corn Cups

If you are looking for eco-friendly, disposable tableware, you need to look no further than Excellent Packaging & Supply. The nine year old company, based in San Pablo, California, specializes in environmentally sustainable packaging and tableware. Its founder Steven Levin had spent 25 years selling Styrofoam plates and plastic cutlery until a light bulb came on. In 2003, he started Excellent Packaging and Supply with co-founder Allen King.

Faced with the ever-growing environmental crisis, people have been increasingly geared towards protecting the ecosystem. Aside from using biodegradable, eco-friendly resources and recycling products, there has been an inclination towards the use of materials that can be utilized for multiple purposes. In the midst of this, EPS envisioned the opportunity of catering to environmentally conscious consumers.

Plates and Coffee Cups Made from Potatoes and Sugar Cane

The company sells dinner plates and coffee cups made from potatoes, sugar cane, bamboo, rice, corn, and others. Its brands include SpudWare, BagasseWare,

EATware, NatureWorks, ecotainer, NatureFlex, BioBag & ECOSAFE, Verterra, and eco-gecko.

Among EPS¡¯s offerings are BagasseWare, a sugarcane-based Styrofoam substitute that can withstand both freezers and microwaves, and SpudWare, utensils made from corn and potato starch that can withstand boiling water. Both are as tough and durable as traditional products but, unlike petroleum-derived plastics, will break down into their natural components within months. Made from bamboo, willow fiber, and rice, EatWare packaging is safe in the microwave. EPS has produced a commercially viable substitute for plastics as well. It has the feel and ease that plastics provide. Unlike plastics, however, the substitute is made of corn and is biocompostable.

EPS has recorded impressive growth over the years, with the revenue jumping from $ 2.4 million in 2004 to $12.9 million in 2008. The remarkable growth rate translates into an annual growth of sixty percent. Its reputation is growing equally fast. It made into the 2006 Green 50 List of Inc.com. Not a small feat for a small company with no more than ten staff on board.
