| 2010 APEC SME Innovation Seminar: " Daegu Initiative Assessment on SME Innovation Policies and Best Practices " |
Dear APEC SME Working Group Members
We are pleased to inform you that APEC SME Innovation Center will host the Daegu Initiative First-Cycle Assessment Workshop (Seminar) to be held on June 7, 2010 in Hong Kong, China on the margin of 30th APEC SME Working Group meeting. The main objective of this seminar is to provide a venue for member economies to present and discuss their self-assessment report of SME Innovation policies and related best practices, especially regarding Daegu Initiative Innovation Action Plans (IAPs). Participants will be also discussing how to draft the first-cycle assessment report of the Daegu Initiative submitted to SME ministers at the 17th SME ministerial meeting in Japan in October 2010 (For more information on the Daegu Initiative, please refer to the Annex I)

Note: The Daegu Initiative is intended as a long-term measure to create economic and policy environment conducive to SME innovation in the APEC region.
- The Daegu Initiative was approved and endorsed at the 12th APEC SME ministerial meeting and 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting
- SME Working Group determines the areas and elements in areas to examine in the cycle at the beginning of each cycle.
- During each cycle, each economy will prepare Innovation Action Plans (IAPS) including achievement, current status, and plans on the areas and elements regarding SME Innovation policies. Member economies are expected to submit their IAPS and implement them.

Since the first cycle (2006~2010) of Daegu Initiative ends this year, APEC SME working group members should assess the first cycle and prepare a report to be submitted to SME ministers. This assessment result will serve as a guide to decide whether to proceed with the second cycle of the Daegu Initiative. It is highly recommended that APEC SME working group members participate in this workshop.
